Jonathan Curtis, Dave Spence and Keith Eich will run for two available seats in the upcoming La Cañada Flintridge City Council race on March 7. They were the only three to file the necessary paperwork to run before the deadline last Friday.
Curtis and Spence will campaign as incumbents. Eich will be seeking his first term.
Curtis, who is in the midst of his first term as mayor, will be seeking his second term. As mayor, Curtis has worked to support the push for the proposed Sagebrush territory transfer and in support of the opposition to the proposed SR-710 Freeway tunnel project.
Spence was elected to the City Council for the first time in April 1992, and has served continuously since, including a record six terms as mayor.
If he’s elected, Spence will serve a seventh term, during which he said he wants to see City Hall successfully relocate to the former Sport Chalet headquarters. He said he also wants to be a part of the forthcoming decision on whether to reduce the number of trash-hauling companies from three to one.
Eich is running for public office for the first time, inspired, he said, by a sense of civic duty. He recently completed a term on the Carnegie Mellon University Alumni Association Board. He has lived in LCF with his wife, Lisa, and their three young children for about two years, he said.
He likes the area, he said, because its vibe reminds him of Poland, Ohio, the small town where he grew up.
The city will consolidate its March 7 election with one being staged by L.A. County, which will present voters with a measure addressing homelessness. Though LCF might have to wait longer to learn the results of the local election, the city is limited to spending no more than $45,000. The last municipal election held by LCF cost the city about $85,000.
In 2015, LCF saved on those election costs when only three candidates — Len Pieroni, Terry Walker and incumbent Michael Davitt — emerged to fill three open seats.
