Rebels Knocked Off by La Salle

The Flintridge Prep varsity girls’ basketball team looked well on its way toward another semifinal with a double-digit lead over visiting La Salle in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3A quarterfinals last week, but Julia Macabuhay scored 27 points in the second half to rally her team past the No. 2-seeded Rebels, 68-61.
“She does it every game,” La Salle head coach Freedom McCullough said of Macabuhay, who finished with game-high 37 points. “Game in and game out, she’s a great team player. She can score and she can attack. She’s a great team leader.”
The Lancers’ defense also stepped up in the second half. Flintridge Prep didn’t put points on the board in the fourth quarter until the halfway mark.
“Normally, we’d crumble in that situation, but this time we came back and fought,” McCullough said. “Julia got a lot of one-on-ones and broke them down.
The Rebels (24-3 overall record) weren’t expecting an early exit from the postseason after the pairings were announced.
“The girls should be proud of their season,” said Kevin Kiyomura, who coaches at Flintridge Prep along with Jayme Kiyomura-Chan. “They accomplished some early goals they set, playing at a much higher division as well. We said the quarterfinals would probably be a good run for us in 3A. … I’m going to be honest, when we got into the playoffs, I thought we could go further, but tonight wasn’t our night.”
Kaitlyn Chen scored 20 points for Prep and Renae Tamura added 18 points. Taylor Yoshida finished with 14 points.
