Three Squatters Arrested on Charges of Grand Theft, Burglary

Three people, part of a larger group reportedly squatting in a bank-owned home, were arrested Thursday, March 2, in La Cañada Flintridge on charges related to burglary theft, according to Alan Chu, a sergeant at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station.
He said one of those arrested was a 36-year-old male, who remains in custody and faces charges of grand theft. The other two, a 36-year-old female and a 23-year-old male who are both charged with burglary, were released on their own recognizance Monday, Chu said.
The three individuals charged were among 10 people — including four juveniles — who appeared to be squatting in a home at 5209 Harter Lane, Chu said.
“They were squatting over there, but we were not there for that reason,” said Chu, who described the home as a bank-owned property. “That’s a civil matter, we’re not going to touch that portion. We contacted the owner and they’re in their own litigation.
“We were there to execute a search warrant.”
Chu said authorities received a call reporting a domestic disturbance at the property on Feb. 26. When responding deputies arrived on the scene, they spotted furniture that looked like items that were stolen from another home on Noren Street, where a house for sale was staged to appeal to potential home-buyers.
“There were a couple of larger pieces identified first and so we executed a search warrant and found all the other stuff,” Chu said.
In all, more than 100 pieces of property were recovered, said Chu, who said the haul included decorative pieces such as potpourri.
