All-Rio Hondo League Selections

All-Rio Hondo League selections were recently announced.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Six La Cañada High School varsity boys’ basketball athletes were recognized.
Seniors Sean Estes and Justin Kouyoumdjian shared the Most Valuable Player award, and junior Patric Panoosi made the first team. Sophomore Ryan Graves was a second-team selection, and Brendan Co and Tyler Wagner each received an honorable mention.
Legendary coach Tom Hofman guided the Spartans to an overall record of 25-5, including a perfect 10-0 run in Rio Hondo League play to win the championship. La Cañada earned a first-round bye in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A playoffs and defeated San Clemente in the second round before falling to Los Angeles Loyola in the quarterfinals.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Six La Cañada High School varsity girls’ basketball players were recognized.
Senior Zoe Williams took home the highest honor by winning the Most Valuable Player award. Alexi Nazarian made the first team, and Tess Oakley-Stilson and Brooke Yasuda earned a spot on the second team. Kristina Kurdoghlian and Stephanie Musso each received an honorable mention.
Second-year head coach Sarah Beattie guided the Spartans to an overall record of 23-6. They won the Rio Hondo League championship with a perfect 10-0 record and defeated Redlands East Valley in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1A playoffs before falling to JW North of Riverside.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Nine La Cañada High School varsity girls’ soccer athletes were recognized.
Ari Aghadjanians won the Player of the Year award, and sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Messier shared the Most Valuable Goalkeeper honor with San Marino’s Emily Boutin. Charlotte Tapp and Chloe Kouyoumdjian made the first team, and Kallie Rushing, Ella Romero and Cecily Lowe were second-team selections. Katie Scoville and Solenn Matuska each received an honorable mention.
First-year head coach Kevin Neumeier guided the Spartans to an overall record of 8-11-3. The squad won the Rio Hondo League title with a record of 5-1-2 and fell to Roosevelt of Eastvale, 2-1, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Eleven members of the La Cañada High School varsity boys’ soccer team were recognized.
Senior Sam Adida, sophomores Matt Brown and Jake Tolkin, and freshman goalkeeper Jorge Max Landa were named to the first team, and Trevar Bambanian, Jack Meeker, Luke Bonham, Brandon Grandalski and Kai Gill were second-team selections. Seve Rodriguez and Ryan Crispi each earned an honorable mention.
First-year head coach Bruno Costa guided the Spartans to an overall record of 14-6-6, including a 7-0-3 record in Rio Hondo League play. La Cañada won its first league crown since 2013 and made an unprecedented run in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs with victories over Pasadena La Salle, Claremont Webb and La Puente Nogales. The Spartans fell to Los Olivos Dunn in a penalty kick shootout, 4-1, in a semifinal match.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Seven La Cañada High School girls’ water polo athletes were recognized.
Sophomore Carolyne Stern received the highest honor in being named the league’s Most Valuable Goalkeeper, and sophomore teammates Genevieve Fraipoint and Mimi Zwaneveld were first-team selections. Senior Camila Grases, sophomore Madison Solares and freshman Tess Fundter made the second team, and senior Heather Connolly received an honorable mention.
First-year coach Nicki Davidson guided the Spartans (21-9 overall record) to a second consecutive Rio Hondo League championship. La Cañada defeated Dana Hills of Dana Point in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs before falling to Montebello Schurr in a second-round match.
