Foothill Water District Holds April Events

The Foothill Municipal Water District has announced a series of community events and activities in April, with the aim to educate residents of the importance of water, especially after the wet season ended drought conditions for many regions across the state.
“We are excited to promote these great events to our residents that remind us of the importance of water,” said FMWD General Manager Nina Jazmadarian. “Our winter storms may have alleviated drought conditions, but our local groundwater basins are at historic lows and still need to recover. After we exit April, the hot summer months will quickly arrive and we look to our residents to keep up a strong water-saving ethic.”
Following is a list of scheduled events:
• April 1 and 2 (Saturday and Sunday) — TPF Native Plant Garden Tour
This is the largest annual outreach event of the Theodore Payne Foundation. Residents may visit beautiful private and public landscapes on either day. Participating in the tour is a great way to gather ideas and inspiration for your own landscapes. For more information, including tickets, contact the Theodore Payne Foundation at (818) 768-1802 or online at theodorepayne.org. Photos and descriptions of all gardens can be found at nativeplantgardentour.org.
• April 3 (Monday) – “Water Is Life” Student Art Contest Deadline
April 3 is the deadline for all entries to “Water Is Life” Student Art Contest. The contest is open to all K-12 students attending a school located within the FMWD service area. This includes schools located within La Crescenta-Montrose, La Cañada Flintridge and Altadena. The grand-prize winning entries will receive $100 each. For more information, visit fmwd.com.
• April 8 (Saturday) – Turf Removal Class at La Cañada Presbyterian Church
FMWD is sponsoring a turf removal class at La Cañada Presbyterian Church. Residents will learn the proper techniques to remove grass and convert lawn into a drought-tolerant landscape. The class time is from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and will be located in the Fellowship Hall. Light refreshments will be provided. To RSVP, visit foothillmwd.wufoo.com/forms/rsvp or call (818) 790-4036.
• April 11 – April 18 “Water Is Life” Student Art Exhibit at Descanso Gardens
Descanso Gardens will host a student art display centered on the theme “Water Is Life”. The exhibit features winning posters from last year’s exhibit. The Student Art Contest is sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. Visitors to the gardens may view the art at the Boddy Lodge.
• April 15 (Saturday) — Water Talk and Walking Tour at Descanso Gardens
FMWD Board President Richard Atwater invites local residents and Descanso Gardens members to join him for an informative water talk and walking tour of the gardens. Atwater will be joined by Rachel Young, director of Horticulture and Garden Operations, as they describe Descanso’s history of water supply development and implementation of new water efficient features. The “Talk & Walk” will occur at 9:30 a.m. and is included with regular admission to the gardens. For more information, email Emi Yoshimura at eyoshimura@descansogardens.org, or call (818) 949-4200.
