In addition to a host of Earth Day-inspired activities, Descanso Gardens this weekend will feature a native wildflower display that will include California poppies.

The Earth has its day every April 22, when people all over the planet gather for rallies, conferences, service projects, and this year at Descanso Gardens, a Botanic Bling.
The Botanic Bling Trunk Sale — recycled and upcycled gifts are among the items that will be for sale — is one of several of Descanso’s Earth Day-themed activities scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday.
The botanic garden, always a prime venue for getting in touch with nature, also will offer a hands-on family gardening opportunity in the Harvest Garden “so kids and adults can get their hands dirty and learn about gardening a bit,” according to Emi Yoshimura, Descanso’s director of education, who was responsible for the Earth Weekend programming.
Over in the main garden, that education will extend to bugs, where visitors can create DIY Insect Homes for “beneficial bugs” such as ladybugs, lacewings and solitary bees that “keep your garden healthy,” Yoshimura said.
Other attractions special to the weekend include a California wildflower display, a native garden walk, Patina’s “fresh-from-the-garden fare” and, starting Thursday, a Mt. San Antonio College Plant Sale, at which students from the college’s horticulture program will sell a variety of potted plants.
“I think it’s a nice variety of things,” Yoshimura said. “We’re really celebrating plants and their role in the ecosystem; it’s an appreciation of healthy habitats and what we can do to help the plants be healthy.
Yoshimura said Descanso has been notably busy all spring, probably because of the wet weather earlier this year: All that rain means the plant life on-site is blooming beautifully, which has helped draw crowds who both want to see the nature in all its glory and also, perhaps, were eager to be outside after being cooped up during those rainy weekends.
“People are eager to get out and celebrate spring with us.”
