Drivers should expect continued slow going along the 210 Freeway, along which the eastbound Berkshire Place on-ramp and Arroyo Boulevard off-ramp will remain closed through June.
In an April 21 news release, Caltrans also detailed numerous of planned nighttime closures associated with the $148.5-million pavement rehabilitation project.
Residents can learn more and share their thoughts at a 6 p.m. City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 2, to which the city has invited Caltrans representatives.
“Caltrans is coming with an update on the progress of the improvement project,” LCF Mayor Michael Davitt wrote in an email. “While we do appreciate the updates, we do need them to be more proactive in providing short-term solutions to these issues. The city is committed to working with Caltrans to help improve the situation until such time as the work is completed. We will continue to push Caltrans to make adjustments, which will make ease of travel more tolerable and safe for our residents.
“The freeway improvements have been burdensome on our residents,” Davitt added. “I believe Caltrans underestimated the negative impacts the local community is faced with.”
Starting this past Monday, overnight closures between 7 p.m.-6 a.m. were to include as many as three lanes in both directions between Lowell Avenue and Lake Avenue.
Other eastbound closures during the same hours this week have included the La Crescenta Avenue and Foothill Boulevard on-ramps, the Gould Avenue off-ramp; and the on- and off-ramps at Pennsylvania Avenue, Angeles Crest Highway, Berkshire Place, Arroyo Boulevard, Lincoln Avenue and Mountain Street.
Going westward, those closures included the Walnut Street on-ramp, the Foothill Boulevard and Ocean View Boulevard off-ramps, the Mountain Street, Lincoln Boulevard, Arroyo Boulevard, Berkshire Place, Angeles Crest Highway and Pennsylvania Avenue on- and off-ramps.
Other closures: the 210 connectors to the southbound 2 Freeway, the 134 Freeway and 710 Freeway.
And, heading in both directions on the 2 Freeway, the Verdugo Boulevard and Foothill off-ramps were going to be closed between 8 p.m.-6 a.m. this week. The northbound 2 Freeway to the eastbound 210 was to be closed between 7 p.m.-6 a.m. and to the westbound 210 between 8 p.m.-7 a.m.
In its release, Caltrans again warned that motorists should expect delays and are strongly advised to plan ahead, use alternate routes, avoid the area or use public transit.
The 210, which serves as a major thoroughfare for commuters between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, has experienced extensive wear, Caltrans says. Once the project is completed in 2018, the new surface is expected to provide a smoother drive for motorists, reduce time required for maintenance and minimize the need for further lane closures.
