The La Cañada High School varsity track and field team turned in a solid performance in the Rio Hondo League finals at South Pasadena and took home five titles last Friday.
The LC girls finished among the top three in eight events and recorded 71.33 points to finish third overall. Morgan Bowman led the charge by winning the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:25.20 and placing third in the 800 with a time of 2:23.58. Teammate Adena DiPaolo wasn’t far behind Bowman and was second in the 1600 with a time of 5:28.98.
“It has been really rewarding having all of my hard work and training this season pay off,” Bowman said in an email. “Not just in terms of being league champion in the mile, but getting a personal best in both the mile and 800 distances. I am excited for the competition at CIF prelims this weekend, and I plan to race the time I know that I can run.”
Sara Auther won gold in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:47.26, and Claire Murray contributed a victory in the 100 hurdles (14.98).
Murray also helped the Spartans post respectable times in two relay races. She teamed up with Kamryn Creighton, Jackie Gevorgian and Samantha Mayer to place second in the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:12.99. The quartet also competed in the 4×100 relay and posted a time of 51.09 for third place.
Caitlin Mispagel had a solid finish for the Spartans in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 inches to win a bronze medal.
The LC boys finished among the top three in three events, which includes two victories.
Seve Rodriguez won the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.74, and Ryan Johnsen recorded a distance of 20 feet, 6 inches to win the long jump. Theo Chamberlain took home a silver medal by clearing 5 feet, 10 inches in the high jump.
All qualified athletes will travel to Costa Mesa to participate in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries at Estancia High School this Saturday, May 13.
