Spartans Perfect in League, Ready for Postseason

The La Cañada High School varsity softball team concluded the regular season with a dominant 12-1 victory over host San Marino last week.
The Spartans (17-4 overall record) finished with a perfect 12-0 record in Rio Hondo League play for the first time since the 2011, the same year the program won a CIF Southern Section championship.
Gillian Arnold sparked La Cañada’s offense with a grand slam in the second inning. Alexis Abboud hit a two-run double and scored twice, Abby Au was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI, Meghan Henry collected two hits and drove in a run, Diana Carranaza had two hits and an RBI, Taryn Harris, Emily Tinkham and Hailey Walton each scored a run, and Maddy Reilly contributed an RBI.
La Cañada ace Holly Stoner capped Rio Hondo League competition with a win and eight strikeouts. The Spartan started every league contest and finished with a 12-0 record. Stoner recorded 102 strikeouts in 66 innings and surrendered only two earned runs in league for an ERA of 0.212.
Chuck Gunter’s squad closed out the season ranked No. 6 in CIF-SS Division 4. The Spartans will host El Monte Arroyo in a first-round playoff game today at 3:15 p.m. The Knights (14-7-1 overall) finished second in the Mission Valley League with a 9-3 record.
