Syrkin Wins Bronze for LC; Flintridge Prep Boys Finish 4th

La Cañada High School freshman Danny Syrkin broke out in the Rio Hondo League finals with three victories and one silver medal, and the standout swimmer carried over that performance onto the biggest stage last Friday.
Syrkin participated in four events at the CIF Southern Section Division 2 swimming and diving finals at the Riverside Aquatics Center and came home a bronze medal. The freshman finished third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.76 and was 11th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.09, which was good enough for CIF State consideration.
The freshman swimmer also teamed up with Luke Stefan, Thomas Hoffman and Eddie Cosic to compete in the 200 free relay race. The four Spartans posted a time of 1:26.52, placing them fourth. The quartet also swam the 200 medley race as the No. 1 seeded team, but they were disqualified because of an early take-off.
The La Cañada boys tallied 73 points and finished 13th in the team standings. Tatsuya Machida contributed to that score by placing eighth in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 427.25.
Two LC girls advanced to the finals and posted 25 points in the team standings. Kara Bradley was sixth in the 1-meter diving with 423.70 points, and teammate Sydney Oakland placed 10th in the same event with a score of 367.90.
Sophomore Maddie O’Dell participated in the CIF-SS Division 2 prelims and finished 28th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.27. She also teamed up with Halley Hemphill, Katrine Madsen and Shannon Ring to compete in the 200 free relay. The quartet finished 21st with a time of 1:42.41. O’Dell, Madsen and Ring were also part of the 200 medley relay along with Rowan Gordon, and the four Spartans placed 22nd with a time of 1:54.09.

The Flintridge Prep boys turned in a stellar effort at the CIF-SS Division 3 finals, posting 163 points to place fourth in the team standings. Anaheim Canyon won the crown with 185 points.
Andy Langen led the charge for the Rebels and teamed up with Brett Bell, Nate Morrissey and Winston Chen to place second in the 400 free relay with 3:13.69. Langen also joined Matt Ng, Chen and Bell to place eighth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.20.
Langen won a bronze medal in the 50 free with a time of 21.33 and placed fifth in the 100 free with a time of 47.14.
Chen also competed in two events, placing fifth in the 100 back with a time of 52.69 and eighth in 200 IM with a time of 2:00.55. Brett Bell took home a bronze medal by finishing the 100 backstroke in 52.17. He also raced the 200 IM and placed 10th with a time of 1:45.60.
Ben Brookbanks, Oliver Brookbanks, Morrissey and Ng competed in the 200 free relay and finished in 1:32.07 for 15th place.
The Prep girls tallied 63 points and placed 14th in the team standings. Senior Emily Alameddine led the Rebels with a fifth-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.29 and a ninth-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 53.87.
Alameddine also competed in two relay races. She teamed up with Makena Walklett, Emily Jacobs and Lena Pawlek in the 200 medley relay and placed 11th with a time of 1:55.08. She also grouped up with Cameron Bielawa, Walklett and Pawlek in the 400 free relay and finished in 3:48.
Pawlek added a 10th-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:20.15.

Christina Campbell represented Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in the CIF-SS Division 1 swimming and diving championships.
The senior Tolog closed out her high school career by placing 11th in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.58 and 12th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.86.
