Descanso Gardens Hosts a Celebration of Water

Descanso Water Speakers

Foothill Municipal Water District is co-sponsoring “Wet and Wonderful: Celebrating Our Precious Water,” an event featuring talks from water experts, a mulch giveaway and a rain barrel sale between 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Descanso Gardens.
Speakers and performances include:
• Lisa Novick, of the Theodore Payne Foundation, at 9:15 a.m. at the Center Circle. The LCF resident will lead a Native Plant Garden walk and talk, offering insight about plants residents can use in their own yards to attract pollinators, birds and other wildlife.
• Dallas Raines, KABC-7 meteorologist, will speak from 10-10:30 a.m. at Van De Kamp Hall.
• Cindy Berglund, Rain Barrels International, will discuss rain barrels between 10:30-11 a.m. at Van De Kamp Hall. She will share barrel basics and explain how to apply for rebates.
• A show titled, “H2O, Where Did You Go?” will take place from 10:30-11:30 a.m. “under the oaks.” The L.A.-based company specializing in quality school assembly programs brings a musical theater-style performance that addresses the value of water, the water cycle, how to conserve water and more. The program is especially suited for children in kindergarten-6th grade.
• Charley Wilson, of the Southern California Water Committee, will lead a discussion on water supplies with a focus on California WaterFix from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Van De Kamp Hall. The WaterFix is a $16.7 billion investment plan proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown and the California Department of Water Resources to upgrade the state’s existing water delivery system by constructing two tunnels to move water supplies underneath, rather than through, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay Delta.
• Cassy Aoyagi, the founder of FormLA Landscaping and president of the Theodore Payne Foundation, will talk about creating lush and low-water gardens and offer a look at the Center Circle garden display she created for Descanso Gardens from 1-2 p.m. at Van De Kamp Hall.
Other event highlights will include a mulch giveaway only for LCF residents who have RSVP’d from 8 a.m.-noon in the auxiliary parking lot.
There also will be water agency and vendor information booths, a native plant display and festival fare for purchase from Patina Group Catering and, at noon and at 1:30 p.m., music from Abe Lagrimos Jr.
Entrance is free, but limited to capacity. RSVP online at

Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Drive in LCF.
