Former LCF Student Earns Fulbright Honor

Ian Morelan, who attended La Cañada Elementary School, La Cañada 7/8 and Loyola High School, was recently awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
Last month, Morelan attended a reception for the Fulbright Scholarship grantees in Norway at the Nobel Institute in Oslo. Morelan will work with other researchers to evaluate the feasibility of a novel approach to prevent disease outbreaks in land-based aquaculture systems. It utilizes natural selection to raise levels of neutral bacteria, giving them an edge over opportunistic pathogens. If the approach is scalable, it will preclude the need for costly and inefficient disinfection methods.
Locally, Moreland was active in Boy Scout Troop 507 where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. While in high school, he served as the Sacristan at St. Bede’s Church.
Morelan graduated from UC Davis in 2013 with a bachelor of science in genetics. In the fall of 2013, he received the Provost Scholarship to Oregon State University to study in the molecular and cellular biology program. He currently is a Ph.D. candidate working on his dissertation in the integrative biology department. Over the years, he has received several research grants and served on the OSU biology department committee to rewrite the genetics curriculum.
