Ten La Cañada High School seniors are among the 16,000 semifinalists — less than 1% of all high school seniors nationwide — in this year’s 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program, the organization announced this week.
LCHS’ talented students continuing in the competition for the 7,500 National Merit Scholarships next spring include Arjun Aron, Veronica Backer-Peral, Yiyin Hu, Erica Lee, Christos Menemenlis, Harrison Min, Blake Northrop, Matthew Randolph, Averi Suk and Cora Wu.
“We’re proud of all our students, but this is such an elite honor,” La Cañada Unified School District Superintendent Wendy Sinnette told the students after they’d been informed of the news Wednesday. “Good job.”
To be considered, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist stage. About 90% of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.
Flintridge Prep also boasts eight semifinalists: Brendan Ashworth, Suha Chang, Jayasri Krishnakumar, Ria Lalwani, Jonathan Le, Conrad Oakes, Sunay Poole and Catherine Turner.
St. Francis’ Nicholas Gould also is a semifinalist.
