Community Center Preschool Adopts a Family at CHLA

This holiday season the joy and significance of giving inspires the “Adopt-A-Family” program at La Cañada Flintridge Community Center Preschool. During December, young students provide gifts and cheer to the family of a patient at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. The preschool will also bring additional presents to unsponsored families in need at CHLA.
The spirit of “Adopt-A-Family” begins just after Thanksgiving, when a festive “Giving Tree,” decorated by parents, stands in the main courtyard. Preschoolers select from nearly 100 ornaments detailing the family’s needs and wishes, such as a hand-held DVD player, winter clothing, bath towels, pillows, puzzles and games. Children and parents then purchase and wrap bright packages that are delivered to CHLA by volunteers before Christmas.

“This family is faced with the overwhelming financial and emotional challenges of caring for an ill child,” said Danielle Caputo, director of LCF Community Center Preschool. “Not only are we delivering holiday wishes and support to the family, but we are also providing our preschoolers the opportunity to learn about the importance of helping others.”
LCF Community Center Preschool has participated in the “Adopt-A-Family” program for the past 17 years. Community-wide giving — especially to those in great need — reflects the school’s nurturing philosophy, curriculum and supportive family atmosphere.
