Descanso Celebrates Camellia Flowers in February

Descanso Gardens has a full calendar of family-friendly events this month, including several celebrating the camellia flower.
• Camellia Walk: Come for a camellia walk and learn about the “queen of winter flowers” on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. or Sunday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m.
• Camellia Arranging Demonstration: George Harrison of the Pacific Camellia Society leads floral arranging demonstrations at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, and 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, using camellias from Descanso Gardens.
• Camellia Shows: Can’t get enough camellias? Shows are scheduled at Van de Kamp Hall, with the Pacific Camellia Society Show on Feb. 17 and 18, and the Southern California Camellia Council Spring Show on Feb. 24 and 25. All shows will run from 1-4:30 p.m.
• The Ensemble Shakespeare Theatre will return to perform “Shakespeare’s Love Scenes and Sonnets,” in the garden on Feb. 17 and 18. Meet at Center Circle and join the players on a walk to the Camellia Forest where the performance will take place.
• Enjoy a talk and walk on “Cycads Demystified,” on Feb. 24, from 10-11:30 a.m. The presentation will be led by Jeff Chemnick, a research associate at the Ganna Walska Lotusland botanical garden in Santa Barbara and an authority on Mexican cycads. The cost is $10 and advanced registration is required.
• Tea Mixology Workshop with Emily Han on Saturday, Feb. 24. Explore how tea adds delicious flavor and complexity to alcohol-free cocktails. Herbalist, educator and author, Han will teach simple ways to infuse teas in beverages. Sample tea-infused “mocktails” and make tea syrup to take home. Advanced registration is required as there is limited space available.
