Scholarship Opportunities Available to LCHS Seniors

Eight scholarships — including five under the umbrella of the La Cañada Teachers Association — are available to graduating La Cañada High School seniors this year. They are:

LCTA Jeanne Maus Memorial Scholarship

The applicant must be a senior at La Cañada High School and must be enrolled in at least two years of course work at LCHS in one of the Fine Arts Departments. One year must be the senior year.
Applicants must not have professional status in any of the areas, must be planning to continue an involvement in art, and must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or better. The emphasis will be on the performance or portfolio. The application deadline is April 12.

LCTA Marjorie Pursel Memorial Scholarship

The La Cañada Teachers Association has established the Marjorie Pursel Memorial Scholarship in memory of a highly respected LCUSD elementary teacher. The scholarship is to be awarded annually to a graduating senior of LCHS.
The scholarship will be granted on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, activities and service, and an interview. The application deadline is April 12.

LCTA Patrick Rappleye Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor the memory and musical accomplishments of former LCHS music student, Patrick Rappleye. It is intended to benefit a student with a passion and love for music, but it is not necessary for the student to intend to be a music major. The applicant must be a graduating LCHS senior, a musician who specializes in a wind instrument, must have been involved in a school or community orchestra, concert/symphonic band, or jazz band for at least two years, one of which is the senior year in high school and must have an overall weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher. The application deadline is April 12.

LCTA Fred Stuhr Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor the memory and artistic accomplishments of former LCHS art student, Fred Stuhr. The applicant must be a graduating senior at LCHS, must be enrolled in at least two years of course work at LCHS in the Art Department (one year must be the senior year), must not have professional status in any of the areas, must be planning to attend a fine arts college and must major in art, and must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or better. The emphasis will be on the portfolio and the student’s intention to attend art school. The application deadline is April 12.

LCTA Future Teachers Scholarship

The La Cañada Teachers Association has established a scholarship fund to encourage those students who have a desire to enter the teaching profession.
Applicants must provide an unofficial copy of a transcript and résumé. Also required is one letter of recommendation that addresses the applicant’s potential to teach, written by an LCHS teacher. A screening process before interviewing will take place and the top five candidates will be interviewed by the LCTA Scholarship Committee. Applicants will be notified of the interview date/time. The application deadline is April 12.

Ryder Buck Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established to celebrate Buck’s life, to honor his memory and to help make a difference in his name.
The applicant must be a graduating senior at LCHS and intend to study performing arts in college in the field of vocal or instrumental music. Please see the application for the interview/audition requirements. The application deadline is April 12.

Steven R. Orr Memorial Scholarship

The family of Steven R. Orr has established the Steven R. Orr Memorial Scholarship in memory of a highly respected member of the La Cañada Community and the father of two La Cañada High School graduates, Matt and Will. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of La Cañada High School. The scholarship will be granted on the basis of academic achievement, extra-curricular involvement, character and an interview. Please see the application for requirements. O. Warren Hillgren Memorial Scholarship
The O. Warren Hillgren Scholarship Fund was established by the Hillgren family and presented by the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce, in honor of this man who served his community in many roles including president of the Chamber of Commerce and mayor of La Cañada Flintridge. O. Warren Hillgren and his wife, Mary Ellen, strongly believed in the public education system of our country and wished to encourage individual students wherever possible. They were tireless advocates of community service and free enterprise and believed it was both an obligation and a privilege to be able to contribute to the betterment of one’s community.
Applications are due to Mrs. Erickson (Counseling Department) by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4; selected applicants will be invited to interview on Monday, April 9. The application is available on the Naviance website under ‘Scholarship List.’
