Earth Day at Descanso Gardens is an opportunity for people to help care for the popular botanical gardens, gain a better understanding of nature and to celebrate the planet, said Jennifer Errico, Descanso Gardens’ public relations manager.
On Sunday, April 22, Descanso Gardens will host a day of activities and volunteer opportunities in honor of Earth Day. The grounds, which include several botanical gardens and a sprawling Oak Woodland, will provide a scenic backdrop for returning members and local families seeking a visceral, hands-on Earth Day experience.

“At Descanso, we are very aware of the importance of nature, and that is why it seems appropriate to celebrate Earth Day by having visitors come and get their hands dirty, connecting with the Gardens through hands-on activities,” Errico said.

Also in honor of Earth Day, Descanso Gardens will partner with the Foothill Municipal Water District today, April 19, to unveil its redesigned drought-tolerant Center Circle entrance area.
Because part of Descanso Gardens’ mission is to teach visitors about native and drought-tolerant plants, the new Center Circle entrance area has been redesigned to feature a dramatic array of colorful, drought-tolerant plants from around the world that thrive in L.A.’s seasonal rainfall and dry summers.
Then, on Sunday, Descanso’s horticulture staff will teach volunteers the proper way to care for the Oak Woodland from 8-10:30 a.m.
From 10-11:30 a.m., families will be treated to a “behind-the-scenes” look at the careful work that goes into maintaining a healthy educational garden.
And from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., visitors will have the opportunity to plant a seed that they can then take home and watch grow.
The fun-filled day will serve dual purposes, giving “a taste of the experience to people who may not be ready or able to commit to being a regular volunteer at Descanso,” Errico said.
