Outlook Earns 11 Journalism Honors in Statewide Contest

The La Cañada Flintridge Outlook newspaper was recognized four times and the Outlook Newspaper group a total of 11 times in the statewide California Journalism Awards contest, which is conducted annually by the California Newspaper Publishers Association. The awards were announced at a luncheon Saturday, April 14, in Sonoma.
Deputy editor Mirjam Swanson’s story about La Cañada High School’s later start time (Sept. 21) took third place in the Coverage of Youth & Education category, as did her sports feature about Walker Cup golfer Collin Morikawa (Sept. 7).
Her stories also were finalists in two more categories for the Outlook’s circulation, including for her story on City Councilman Dave Spence’s death (May 18) among “Coverage of Local Government” entries and for her article profiling Jude DeMatteis, a young boy who is dealing with Crohn’s Disease (Dec. 21) in the feature story field.

“These CNPA honors reflect the quality that we at the Outlook strive for every week,” Outlook Publisher Charlie Plowman said. “The recognition by California judges in so many categories is flattering — and humbling. We have a great staff, and this is truly a team effort by our reporters, our editors, our production department and our photographers. It is gratifying to receive acknowledgment for their hard work and passion for journalism.”
Approximately 500 newspapers statewide are members of the CNPA. More than 3,000 entries were submitted in the contest.
Outlook Newspapers also won eight more awards for work published in its San Marino and Pasadena editions.
In San Marino, the Outlook took first in the Coverage of Education and Youth category, second place for a sports game story and was a finalist for an enterprise news story.
The Pasadena edition was honored with a third-place sports feature story, and as a finalist in the profile story, sports feature story and sports game story categories.
In the 2016 contest, the LCF Outlook placed with a sports feature story and earned honorable mention for environmental reporting, coverage of business news and for its Back to School special section.
