La Cañada Flintridge resident Scott Kraft was named managing editor of the Los Angeles Times last week, the newspaper reported.
“Scott’s promotion is an acknowledgment of the role he instinctively took on during the past tumultuous year, working with teams throughout the newsroom to produce journalism of the highest quality,” said Executive Editor Norman Pearlstine, according to the Times.
Kraft, who most recently served as deputy managing editor, has been with the Times for more than 30 years. His new responsibilities include foreign, national, Washington, California and Metro news, in addition to investigations and enterprise reporting.
Kraft, 63, also previously was the Times’ front-page editor and national editor, during which time he directed coverage of 9/11, presidential elections, the Bill Clinton impeachment and Hurricane Katrina.
Raised in Kansas, Kraft joined the Times’ Chicago bureau in 1984, after working at the Associated Press, where he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
He’s also been a national reporter and foreign correspondent, serving stints as bureau chief in Nairobi, Kenya; Johannesburg; and Paris.
His story on the AIDS epidemic in Africa won the Society of Professional Journalists’ Distinguished Service Award for Foreign Correspondence.
Pearlstine’s leadership team is filled out by Kris Viesselman in the newly created position of chief transformation editor and creative director; Kimi Yoshino, deputy managing editor; Colin Crawford, deputy managing editor; and Nick Goldberg, who will continue to oversee the editorial pages.
