La Cañada Boys Win Meet of Champions, Girls Place 15th in Team Standings

The La Cañada High School varsity boys’ swimming team dominated the Meet of Champions at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut last weekend, taking home the first-place banner with 533.5 points.

Danny Syrkin had a career day for the Spartans, winning two singles races and placing among the top two in two relay events.

He won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.89 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly with 48.72 seconds.

The junior standout teamed up with Eddie Cosic, Thomas Hoffman and Chris O’Grady to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:32.92, establishing a new school and meet record. The quartet also competed in the 200 freestyle relay and placed second with a time of 1 minute, 24.84 seconds.

Cosic also medaled for La Cañada by placing third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.65.

O’Grady posted a time of 59.66 in the 100 breast and placed sixth. He also finished the 200 free in 1:44.58 for seventh place.

Braden Beagle also contributed a sixth-place finish for the Spartans, finishing the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.15. He also raced the 200 individual medley and finished in 1:56.68 for 11th place.

Thomas Hoffman was seventh in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.54, and Joshua Kim also had a seventh-place finish by posting a time of 1:57.14 in the 200 IM. Kim later competed in the 100 breast and finished in 1:00.50 for 15th place.

Ryan Silva, Beagle, Kim and Hoffman teamed up to compete in the 400 free relay. The Spartans posted a time of 3:14.90, which was good for ninth place.

Juan Grases was 15th in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.95 and Noah Hirshon finished the 100 backstroke in 53.84 for 19th place.

Mark Fanelli also competed in the 100 back race and placed 17th with a time of 55.34. He represented LCHS in the 200 IM event and posted a time of 2:01.59 for 18th place.

Silva contributed a 23rd-place finish after posting a time of 49.99 in the 100 freestyle.

The La Cañada varsity girls also competed in the Mt. SAC Meet of Champions, garnering 207 points and placing 15th in the team standings.

Alexandra Syrkin led the Spartans with a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (57.20 seconds). The sophomore also competed in the 200 freestyle and placed 10th with a time of 1:53.27.

Syrkin teamed up with Maddie O’Dell, Isabella Caramaschi and Shannon Ring to participate in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet finished the race in 1:53.53 and placed eighth.

Ring was seventh in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.31 and 26th in the 200 free with a time of 2:01.33.

Angelie Paull also competed in two finals events. She finished the 100 back in 1:02.22 for 13th place and placed 16th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.63.

Paull grouped up with Nina Blanco, Halley Hemphill and Alexa Veingko to compete in the 200 free relay. The Spartans placed sixth with a time of 1:42.15.
