Footage from a La Cañada Flintridge resident’s Ring security system resulted in the recent arrests of two people suspected of attempting to burglarize the man’s house in February.
According to Detective Rodger Burt of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station, a juvenile approached the residence, located on Alcorn Drive, and knocked on the door. After the juvenile determined no one was in the home, two other suspects jumped over the fence to the backyard, but ran off after the homeowner used an app to shout at them through the Ring system there. Nothing was taken or broken.
Burt said he recognized one of the three suspects on the camera footage as a Pacoima resident who had outstanding warrants for other burglaries, including in La Crescenta. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department put out warrants for another man and the juvenile for the attempted burglary, with officers from the Los Angeles Police Department arresting the second man last week.
Images taken from the security video also allowed the LAPD to identify the juvenile, who had prior arrests. The Sheriff’s Department arrested him two months ago, charging him with additional counts of attempted burglary for knocking on the doors of other residences on Alcorn Drive, according to Burt.
Authorities are still working to identify the third suspect, described as a male Hispanic wearing a dark hooded jacket the day of the burglary attempt.
Burt credits the security system for allowing police to apprehend the suspects.
“I would encourage anybody … that wants to purchase one of those kinds of cameras. I think it is a great system to have for the security of your home,” Burt said in a phone interview.
The La Cañada Flintridge City Council voted in October 2017 to fund a partnership with Ring which allowed residents and businesses to save $100 on the camera system. The program proved more popular than expected, prompting the council to renew it three times. A total of $44,750 was budgeted to offer the rebate to up to nearly 900 applicants, according to announcements on the city website. The program ended on June 26.
