La Cañada Presbyterian Church’s Parent Education Program recently had its annual Year-End Celebration at Ashley Barrett’s home, wrapping up its 40th anniversary year. In addition to showing gratitude to the program’s 44 team members, the event honored the Young and Erskine families for the memorials they donated to Parent Ed over the past year.
The Cathy & Christopher Erskine Compassion Memorial was established in honor of their generous spirits. To date, the memorial has collected more than $20,000 and been used to help individuals and families in need. Cathy Erskine was an inspiring board chair of LCPC Parent Ed from 2006-07 and a member of the Advisory Council. She died of cancer in 2018 and her son, Christopher Michael IV, also died that year. Jack and Chris Erskine accepted plaques honoring Cathy and Christopher.
Donors may contribute to the Erskine memorial by sending checks to LCPC Parent Ed at 626 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011, designating the memorial.
In addition, Eileen Young memorials totaling $4,458 were donated to the LCPC Parent Education Founders’ Scholarship Fund to provide partial or full tuition for participants needing assistance. Young, who died in 2018, was a beloved Parent Ed teacher assistant for almost 20 years and was named the program’s 2019 Honorary Shining Star. Her husband, George Young, was present to receive acknowledgments of the honor.
The evening began with an elegant potluck, and commendations were made by director Anne Bierling. Board chair Maggie Mason presented gifts with the theme “The joy of the Lord is my strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).
Highlights of Parent Ed’s program year included hosting approximately 600 parents and children in the 2018-19 classes, expanding evening classes through the Parent Express Program and raising record amounts through fundraising — all possible because of community support and the program’s team.
Team members included Amanda Baughman, Angela Shepherd-Isagholian, Anne Bierling, Ashley Barrett, Ashley Smith, Barbara Stratte, Betsy Farhat, Carol Van Citters, Charlotte Miller, Daniela Kim, Darby Pearson, Debbie Barsom, Dorothy Chen, Heather Ehrhart, Jan Roberts, Jana Van Dyck, Jina Khachik, Judy Lee, Kathy Kovalcik, Katrina Harbers, Katie Enney, Katy Riddell, Lynne Graves, Maggie Mason, Meg Wade, Mikki Weightman, Monica Skeehan, Melanie Frey, Nanette Brown, Paige Dunbar, Paige Thatcher, Paula Giboney, Rebekah Garcia, Sarah Montes, Sloan Walsh, Stephanie Ferguson, Tracy Tobias and Vicki Rekedal.
Registration is now open for fall classes for parents whose children range from newborns to 18-year-olds. Seven new night classes are slated to accommodate those who cannot meet during the day. Visit lacanadapc.org/parented after Aug. 12 to see night class offerings and read about classes, instructors, schedules, scholarships and payment plans.
