The La Cañada Pickleball Association is a newly formed nonprofit 501(c)(3), the purpose of which is to advocate for more courts in La Cañada Flintridge and simultaneously promote this fast-growing activity to the city’s 3,000-plus senior population.
Pickleball is exercise, it is social and can be competitive. It is played on Sundays at a court in LCF, where an average of 18 players wait to play a 15-minute game.
The goal is to accommodate 16 players at one time instead of only four on one court. Four Pickleball courts will fit on one tennis court. The tennis net would be retained as the surface would be designated a dual purpose court. Currently, there is usually from six to 14 players waiting to play one game while the tennis courts are often half empty.
COVID has slowed the process to obtain more courts but not the enthusiasm of current players who number about 200. With more courts, new and advanced players can better find their level of play.
Instruction is supplied by volunteers on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m.-noon. Equipment to play is supplied by the city’s Parks and Recreation department.
