LCHS Roll Through Two Nonleague Games

The La Cañada High School varsity baseball team prepared for its final round of Rio Hondo League action with two nonleague victories last week.

The Spartans opened the week against St. Genevieve of Panorama City and prevailed with a 5-2 win. Brandon Shepherd, making his first appearance on the mound this season, earned the win for La Cañada with one inning of scoreless work in relief of Brandon Cho, who had struck out six with no walks in four frames. Nathan Mertens picked up the save with four strikeouts over the final two innings.

Adam Geller and Timmy Park led the offense for the Spartans, with Geller recording three hits and one RBI and Park hammering two doubles for two RBIs. Geller and Park both scored, with Cho, Keegan Serdar and Evan Umland also tallying runs for the Spartans. Jack Erskine knocked in the team’s first run of the game, and Thomas Decker later added what proved to be the game-winning RBI with a double.

La Cañada continued its winning ways on Friday and defeated Northridge Heritage Christian in emphatic fashion, 15-0. Chase Kerstein was dominant on the mound, throwing four shutout innings of no-hit ball with six strikeouts. Umland wrapped up the game with three strikeouts in the final inning.

The offense lit up the scoreboard with 11 hits, including doubles from Geller, Park and Decker. Park and Chris Nava each had three RBIs, with Decker and Alex Higa recording two RBIs each.  The entire lineup scored, with Geller, Higa, Park, Decker, Nava, Umland, Ryan Kiessling, Jakob Torres, and Ethan Geller all putting runs up for La Cañada.

The Spartans are scheduled to play their final six regular-season games against Rio Hondo League opponents. They will host San Marino this Friday at 3:30 p.m. and then travel to Monrovia on Tuesday.
