Two Contenders Set to Run for City Council

First published in the March 3 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

In the 16 days since the nomination period for those seeking one of two seats on the La Cañada Flintridge City Council opened, only two have thrown their hat into the ring.
Incumbent Mike Davitt, who has served on the City Council since 2011, is seeking re-election and Kim Bowman Jr. — currently serving on the Parks and Recreation Commission — has filed the necessary paperwork to be nominated.
Davitt, a longtime LCF resident, has been involved in public service since 2003 and served as mayor in 2020 as the city dealt with the coronavirus pandemic. He was the Planning Commissioner chair before being elected to City Council in 2011 and helped the city acquire the new City Hall building. Davitt also served as president of the LCF Tournament of Roses Association the past two years.
“Over the past 11 years, it has been an honor and a privilege to serve on the City Council,” Davitt said in a statement. “We have made great progress over the years improving our community while preserving our wonderful quality of life. I have had the privilege to call La Cañada Flintridge my home for most of my life. I would like to continue my service to the community in order to make La Cañada Flintridge an even better place to live and work.”

Bowman, a major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and special counsel for a Los Angeles County nonprofit legal organization, moved from South Pasadena to LCF in 2019 with his wife, Dr. Cynthia Nguyen, and quickly got involved in his new hometown by co-organizing the La Cañada Flintridge Welcome Association, a group meant to help families and residents new to the city to become better acquainted with each other and everything LCF has to offer. He is running to “ensure effective services, promote smart growth and to increase community connection,” Bowman said.
“As a father to a 16-month-old, I know it’s not just about the challenges we are facing now,” he added. “It’s also about having the vision to address the issues we will be facing in 10 years. My personal mission is to solve problems and serve people. That is what I have done through service to our city through the Welcome Association and as a Parks and Recreation commissioner.”
The other incumbent is Jonathan Curtis, who has lived in LCF for nearly 20 years and was elected to the City Council in 2013. He has yet to file papers seeking re-election and could not be reached for comment as of the Outlook Valley Sun’s press deadline.
The deadline to file for nomination is Friday, March 11, at 5 p.m. Anyone interested in running for a seat on the City Council should contact City Clerk Tania Moreno at (818) 790-8880 or tmoreno@lcf.ca.gov.
