Honor Nature, Save the Trees

First published in the April 14 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

Ever watch Universal Pictures’ popular movie “The Lorax”? It tells the story of what inevitably happens when communities forget the importance of nurturing and honoring nature.
La Cañada Flintridge is a quaint city in the Foothills of the Angeles Forest. Such proximity makes La Cañada home to gorgeous mature trees that take more than hundreds of years to grow. As residents, we must have a shared attention to neighborhood preservation and respect for nature.
Recently, the city shared its plans for the construction of Palm Crest Elementary. The proposed design calls for the removal of several trees. It takes decades and centuries for trees to develop. Additionally, the general design is not consistent with the look and feel of the homes surrounding the school. The design looks like concrete block, turning our charming neighborhood elementary school into a concrete jungle.
As an alumnus of La Cañada schools and longtime resident, maintaining the components that makes La Cañada the special community it is needs to be at the center of all we do. If we allow these trees to be removed and the school to be overdeveloped in ways that compromise the integrity of nature and our neighborhood, then we are setting a very dangerous precedent.
We should be planting more trees, not removing them.
