Tree Removal Will Leave a Scar

First published in the April 14 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

As a lifelong resident of La Cañada Flintridge, I have watched this community develop from a quiet town to a well-groomed community. We have always been most proud of our trees, especially the majestic deodars in the Alta Cañada area.
La Cañada Flintridge has been given the designation of a “Tree City.” Do we want to lose this designation? Why they want to overdevelop this area by destroying the old-growth trees just to enlarge the school and its parking lot is beyond belief. The removal of the historic Bullock home and even worse, the destroying of so many majestic old-growth trees to justify some additional parking and some unattractive pre-fabricated buildings in one of our most desirable areas is shocking.
I realize these decisions are not made by residents of this fair city or of this beautiful area. Perhaps the nearby residents should be more respected than to have their privacy violated by additional and unwarranted destruction.
Many of us walk this area for its beauty and tranquility. Is another parking spot worthy of sacrificing these very old trees?
