First published in the April 28 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

The Jack Lantz Big Band will present a celebration themed Jazz Vespers in the La Cañada Presbyterian Church on Sunday, May 1, at 5 p.m. in the sanctuary.
The occasion will be a celebration of the Easter season and “throwing off the shackles of COVID-19.” In addition, the church will support the people of Ukraine in their struggle for freedom with jazz and prayer.
Featuring sacred swinging jazz, the jazz worship service will be a combination of energetic musical style and simple liturgy provides a stimulating way to reflect on life today and prepare for the challenges of the week ahead.
The May 1 Jazz Vespers program will feature the Jack Lantz Sextet with Lantz on piano; Jeff Kaye on trumpet; Jim Youngstrom on saxophone; Phil Menchaca on trombone; Nick Morabito on bass; and Dave Marks on drums.
As usual, the band will improvise on familiar hymns, jazz and gospel tunes. Between musical selections, Lantz will provide the inspirational back story behind the songs, while the program is wrapped in simple liturgy for the day.
No charge (free-will offering available) and no reservations required for this hourlong event.
The event will be offered in-person as well as livestreamed at live.lacanadapc.org.
La Cañada Presbyterian Church is located at 626 Foothill Blvd. For further information, call the church office at (818) 790-6708, or visit lacanadapc.org.
