Spartans Edged in 2nd Round; Flintridge Prep to Semifinals

First published in the May 12 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

The La Cañada High School varsity boys’ tennis team was edged by visiting Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach, 77-71, in total games after tying 9-9 in sets won in the CIF-SS Division I second-round matchup last Friday.
The contest was tied 6-6 after the first two rounds and decided in the final round of doubles play.
“We switched our lineup from Wednesday to Friday,” head coach Will Moravec said. “When we played Mira Costa, their No. 1 and No. 2 singles players are really, really good, so we decided to put a lot of our talent in doubles and the theory was we could get eight or nine points out of doubles. We just came up a little bit shy.”
LC’s No. 1 singles player junior Lance Morgan tallied a pair of victories 6-1, 6-3. Meanwhile, the No. 3 doubles team of Luke Kim and Luke Manion swept 6-0, 6-2, 7-5, the No. 2 duo of sophomores Spencer Moravec and Konan Sahara also swept 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The No. 1 tandem of juniors Dylan Luu and Aaron Magtoto tallied one set victory, 6-1.
“I think we performed where we are supposed to be as a Division I tennis team,” Will Moravec said. “The guys were pretty proud of what they did this season.”
The Spartans concluded the campaign as Rio Hondo League runners-up with a 6-2 record (10-4 overall) as they look for Morgan, Sahara and Spencer Moravec to anchor the team next season.

FLINTRIDGE PREP
The Wolves collected a 14-4 victory over visiting Oxford Academy of Cypress in a CIF-SS Division III quarterfinal matchup on Monday.

Flintridge Prep previously won their second-round match by defeating host Foothill Technology High in Ventura, 14-4, last Friday.
