Refusal to Answer 2020 Election Question Is Red Flag

First published in the May 26 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

As an almost 24-year resident of our wonderful city of La Cañada Flintridge, I have written only two prior letters to our local newspaper, both concerning the proposed development projects across from the ARCO station at the intersection of Woodleigh Lane and Foothill Boulevard because of the need to comply with the California Environmental Quality Act.
I am writing again because I was appalled to learn that at the recent City Council candidates’ forum, incumbent Michael Davitt and new candidates Marija Decker and John “Jack” Schaedel all refused to answer the question whether the 2020 presidential election was secure. Only candidate Kim Bowman had the courage to answer what has been repeatedly proven — that the 2020 election that former President Trump lost was secure.
Sadly, it is apparent that a new litmus test is now required not just in national politics, but also for local politics. A candidate should not be in public office if the candidate cares so little about our country’s democracy that the candidate is afraid to do what courageous Congresswoman Liz Chaney is doing — publicly acknowledge that former President Trump and his minions are pushing the big lie that election was rigged, and thereby endangering our democracy.
Regarding Schaedel, it is also disturbing to learn that he wasted more than $45,400 in school district funds for frivolous formal complaints, which is even more concerning because he is an experienced attorney. For Schaedel to do this reveals that he should not be in a position of leadership in our local government, notwithstanding the current California State surplus, and our good of having a strong Educational Foundation, a strong Assistance League of Flintridge, and countless talented parent and other community volunteers supporting our great public schools. While our LCUSD Board of Education deals with school matters, it is important for all our elected officials to be ethical citizens committed to do what is right.
