Speed Bumps Needed to Deter Speeders

First published in the Aug. 11 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

Mitigating the “pandemic” of speeding in La Cañada Flintridge by posting signs and “educating” motorists will be useless! Those people who are speeding could care less and will continue.
Strict enforcement of speed limits won’t work either because it’s become socially and morally incorrect to actually hold people accountable for breaking laws. What will work is making it difficult or “uncomfortable” to speed, such as speed bumps.
But there’s little hope of that with the La Cañada Traffic Department’s agenda of “no speed bumps because they annoy motorists.” They’ve actually told us that! Just ask the homeowners on Hampton Road as we’ve tried to get speed bumps for years because it’s not unusual for drivers to go 40-45 mph and more [25 mph posted].
And the traffic bureaucrats won’t change until there’s an “incident,” i.e., a pet killed, a child or walkers injured, or worse. Then it’ll be “Oh, we didn’t know there was a problem!”
