Spartans Dominate Rosemead in Opener

The La Cañada High School varsity football team kicked off its season with a 56-26 nonleague victory at Rosemead last Friday behind a dominant first half that saw the Spartans take a controlling 49-14 lead.
Senior Corey Cheung led the Spartans’ offense by carrying 12 times for 145 yards with four touchdowns. He also added four tackles on defense.
Meanwhile, junior quarterback Macky Plocher tossed six completions for 106 yards and one touchdown while adding four carries for 23 yards on the ground.
Sophomore Sohan Garg posted three carries for 11 yards and junior Luke Raulli had one carry for six yards.
Senior Anthony Venneri and junior Hayden Dancsecs each caught three passes for 75 and 31 yards, respectively, while the former added a touchdown.
Senior kicker Royce Xiao went 7-for-7 in extra-point attempts while junior Ryan Franklin converted his lone PAT attempt.
Senior Andrew Gevorgian was at the center of a sturdy Spartan defense with 10 tackles and a pass deflection while sophomore Josh Carruthers added eight tackles. Junior Cayden Klein recorded a touchdown on a 61-yard fumble return while adding three tackles on defense.
Junior Lorenz Bayug had two interceptions and returned one for a touchdown while adding two tackles on defense. Senior Max Russakow had five tackles and a sack for a loss of eight yards while Venneri also had five tackles with a pass deflected and 144 yards on four kickoff returns. Senior Mateo Gallegos and junior Anthon Cannon each had six tackles, senior Nyel Bangash, junior Paulos Cucullu, junior Griffin Milewski and sophomore Tyler Breckheimer each posted a pair of tackles, and junior Alex Quan finished with one tackle.
LCHS (1-0) will visit Norwalk for a nonleague game on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m.
