Build It and They Will Come

First published in the Sept. 15 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

Some people are upset over the use of taxpayer money to fund pickleball courts.
One person indicated that, in past years, there were not enough tennis courts. Her solution was to join a private club and pay to use private courts. We are not all privileged to join private clubs. Some seniors, even in La Cañada Flintridge, are maintaining on fixed incomes. The cost would cause financial issues.
The few current outdoor pickleball courts are repurposed, subpar tennis and basketball courts. These courts are not even available daily. They are only here on a trial basis.
Pickleball should not be kept as an elite sport only for those who can pay. There should be equal access to all who want to play — “Build it and they will come.”
