The 3rd graders in Laurie Hopkins’ class at La Cañada Elementary School were tasked with the STEM engineering challenge of building a straw boat and understanding the concept of buoyancy.
They were given 10 straws, a piece of plastic wrap and three inches of tape. After designing and building their boats, to their excitement the floating test occurred in a small pool. One by one, students carefully added pennies to their boats to see how many it can hold before sinking. Olivia Park’s boat won, holding 63 pennies.
