Spartans Defeat Flintridge Prep, Fall to San Marino

The La Cañada High School varsity girls’ tennis team lost its Rio Hondo League opener last Thursday at perennial powerhouse San Marino, 17-1, as the No. 2 doubles team of seniors Tsehay Driscoll and Amanda Grabel picked up the Spartans’ lone set victory, 6-4.
The Spartans previously defeated visiting Flintridge Prep last Wednesday in a nonleague match, 14-4. LC’s doubles teams won eight of nine sets, as the No. 1 tandem of seniors Allison Woo and Kylie Hwang (6-2, 6-0, 6-0) and the No. 2 duo of Driscoll and Grabel (6-0, 6-1, 6-1) each swept. Meanwhile, the No. 3 doubles team of senior Riley Thornburgh and sophomore Kaylee Thornburgh tallied a pair of victories, 6-2, 6-0.
The singles players did their part, collecting six of nine set wins despite getting swept by Flintridge Prep’s No. 1 singles player Katharina Zirn by scores of 6-3. No. 1 sophomore Lauren Kim (6-1, 6-3), No. 2 freshman Jessica Simonian (6-2, 6-0) and No. 3 senior Chia Matuska (6-0, 6-3) each defeated Flintridge Prep’s No. 2 sophomore Emily Hsiao and No. 3 Sophia Haddad.
Flintridge Prep’s No. 1 team of senior Rachel DeMerit freshman Sienna Beltz picked up the lone doubles victory, 6-4.

FLINTRIDGE PREP
The Wolves edged visiting Westridge School of Pasadena last Friday in their Prep League opener, 10-8.
Before the La Cañada matchup, Flintridge Prep lost a nonleague contest at Alhambra Mark Keppel last Tuesday, 11-7. No individual statistics were reported to the Outlook Valley Sun.
The Wolves (3-2 overall, 1-0 in league) will continue league action at Palos Verdes Chadwick on Friday, Sept. 30, at 3:30 p.m.

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART
The Tologs lost a pair of Mission League matches last week, falling at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks last Thursday, 11-5, and losing to visiting Marlborough High of Los Angeles last Tuesday, 17-1. No individual statistics were reported to the Outlook Valley Sun.
FSHA (1-4 overall, 0-2 in league) will continue league action at Chaminade High in West Hills on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 3:30 p.m.
