La Cañada’s Purdy, Hughes Set Career-High Marks

The La Cañada High School varsity girls’ volleyball team won its eighth straight match and remained undefeated in Rio Hondo League play last Thursday after sweeping visiting Blair High of Pasadena, 25-3, 25-7, 25-3.
The Spartans picked up a thrilling 25-18, 18-25, 25-18, 24-26, 15-11 nonleague victory last Wednesday at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, as a trio of LC players set season-high marks. Senior Nikki Hughes posted a career-high seven aces while adding eight kills, 10 digs and two blocks. Junior Tatum Purdy registered a new career-high mark with 44 assists while adding six digs and one kill. Sophomore Ashby Zubchevich posted a season-high 21 kills with seven digs and two blocks. Junior Haley Clark collected 19 kills, 11 digs and two aces, while junior Chloe Nussbaum tallied 16 digs, three aces and three assists. Freshman Vani Tatoulian recorded four blocks and two kills, sophomore Katie McGuinness had two blocks and one dig, and junior Maya Dingle finished with a pair of aces.
LCHS previously swept visiting Monrovia in a league match, 25-16, 25-17, 25-22, as Zubchevich led with 12 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Hughes collected nine kills and five digs, Clark tallied seven kills, one ace, one block and one dig, and Purdy amassed 20 assists, six digs, two aces and one kill. Nussbaum recorded 15 digs and eight assists, Tatoulian finished with four kills and two blocks, and senior Rachael Salit produced two aces, four digs and one kill. Sophomore Danica Eggleston had five assists and one dig, McGuinness had one kill and one block, and Dingle notched two aces.
The first-place Spartans (21-3 overall, 6-0 in league) will compete in the Southern California Invitational Tournament on Friday, Oct. 7, at Saturday, Oct. 8.

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART

The Tologs reclaimed sole possession of first place in the Angelus League standings last Thursday after defeating visiting Notre Dame High of Sherman Oaks, 25-23, 25-20, 25-11. FSHA got the outcome it wanted after being swept at Notre Dame earlier in the week.
Senior Nikki Garriola amassed 18 kills, 16 digs and four aces, while junior Mikayla Hsieh collected 16 digs, 13 assists, two kills and three blocks. Junior Luisa Madrigal produced nine kills, sophomore Piper Scherbert tallied four kills, four blocks and five digs, and junior Veronica Udell posted two kills and four digs. Junior Lindsey Du registered 29 digs and four aces, Ally Du recorded 17 assists and 11 digs, and senior Charlotte Taylor finished with 15 digs. Senior Keira Limon had two kills, three blocks and two digs, while senior Emily Smith notched six digs.
FSHA won a thrilling league match last Tuesday at Louisville High in Woodland Hills, 25-18, 20-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-10. Garriola led with 16 kills, 10 digs and three blocks, while Hsieh amassed 29 digs, 12 assists and eight kills. Madrigal collected six kills and seven digs, Udell registered five kills and six digs, and Scherbert produced nine digs, four blocks and three kills. Ally Du posted 14 assists and 11 digs, Taylor recorded 17 digs, and Lindsey finished with Du eight digs and one kill. Smith had three aces, while Limon notched one kill.
The Tologs lost their first league match last Monday after being swept at Notre Dame, 25-22, 25-19, 25-13. Garriola posted 17 digs, three kills and two aces, Madrigal tallied four kills and three digs, and Hsieh collected nine assists, four digs and three kills. Scherbert registered three kills and five digs, Taylor had 14 digs, and Lindsey Du recorded 11 digs and two aces. Ally Du finished with six digs, seven assists and one ace, Carney had three kills, and Udell produced two kills and one block. Limon notched one kill and one dig, while Smith had one dig.
FSHA (13-12 overall, 4-1 in league) will compete in the San Diego Tournament on Friday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 8.

FLINTRIDGE PREP
The Wolves competed in the Gabrielino Invitational Tournament in San Gabriel last Saturday, losing the finale to North Torrance High in a one-set match. Flintridge Prep competed well in pool play, defeating Holy Family High of Glendale, 25-9, 25-10, and Bravo High of Los Angeles, 25-17, 25-17. The Wolves suffered their only loss against Taft High of Woodland Hills, 25-12, 25-18.
Flintridge Prep won a thrilling five-set Prep League match last Tuesday at Palos Verdes Chadwick, 21-25, 25-15, 19-25, 25-23, 15-9. Abbie Callaway amassed 22 kills, 22 digs, two aces and three blocks, while Jessica Powell collected 20 kills, three blocks and four digs. Jaleen Tseng and Ashlyn Nam each had four aces, while Lucy Liu registered three aces and three blocks.
Flintridge Prep (10-7 overall, 3-5 in league) will host Westridge School of Pasadena in a league matchup on Friday, Oct. 7, at 5:30 p.m.
