LCHS Wins a Pair of League Matches

The La Cañada High School varsity girls’ tennis won a Rio Hondo League match last Thursday at South Pasadena, 12-6, as the doubles teams were victorious in eight of their nine sets.
The No. 1 tandem of seniors Allison Woo and Amanda Grabel (7-5, 6-3, 6-2) and the No. 2 duo of senior Riley Thornburgh and sophomore Kaylee Thornburgh (6-1, 7-6, 6-4) each swept, while the No. 3 team of senior Kylie Hwang and Chia Matuska won a pair of sets, 6-2, 6-0. No. 1 singles star Jessica Simonian (6-0, 6-3) and No. 2 Lauren Kim (6-3, 6-3) each tallied a pair of victories.
The Spartans previously defeated host Temple City in a league match, 14-4. The No. 1 team of Woo and Grabel (6-1, 6-1, 6-1), the No. 2 tandem of Hwang and Kaylee Thornburgh (6-1, 6-3, 6-4), and No. 1 singles Simonian (6-3, 6-1, 6-0) each swept their Temple City counterparts. The No. 3 duo of seniors Bianca Cugno and Siran Kachakaryan (6-0, 6-3), and No. 2 singles Kim (6-3, 6-2) each won a pair of sets, while No. 3 singles Lillian Chambras won a set, 6-0.
LCHS (5-1 overall, 3-1 in league) will continue league action at Monrovia on Thursday, Oct. 13.

FLINTRIDGE PREP

The Wolves lost a Prep League match last Friday to visiting Mayfield Senior of Pasadena, 12-6.
The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Rachel DeMerit and Sophie Haddad (6-0, 6-1) and the No. 2 duo senior Avery Hobey and junior Kayla Lee (6-2, 6-3) each won a pair of sets. Meanwhile, the No. 3 tandem of junior Nicole Lee and sophomore Vanessa Hsu (6-3) and No. 1 singles Katharine Zirn (6-2) each posted one victory.
Flintridge Prep previously routed visiting Providence High of Burbank in a league match, 15-3, as the singles players dominated with nine nearly spotless victories. No. 1 sophomore Emily Hsiao and No. 2 Haddad each won their sets by scores of 6-0, while No. 3 freshman Kate Snaer won 6-0, 6-0, 6-1. The No. 1 doubles team of DeMerit and freshman Sienna Beltz (6-1, 6-0, 6-2) and the No. 2 tandem of Kayla and Nicole Lee (6-3, 6-0, 6-0) each swept.
The Wolves (5-4 overall, 3-2 in league) will travel to Pasadena City College to battle their league rival Polytechnic School on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 3:30 p.m.

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART

The Tologs lost a Mission League match last Thursday at Marlborough High in Los Angeles, 17-1.
FSHA was previously edged in a nonleague match at Mayfield Senior in Pasadena, 10-8. No. 3 singles Ashley Hurjak swept 6-4, 6-3, 6-0, No. 1 Nathalie Genyk picked up a pair of 6-0 victories, and No. 2 Madison Wu won a set, 6-2. The No. 2 doubles team of Meghan Garrity and Kate Mann recorded a pair of victories, 6-0, 6-4.
Flintridge Sacred Heart (2-7 overall, 1-4 in league) will continue league action at Harvard-Westlake High in Studio City on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 3:30 p.m.
