Pickleball at Glenhaven Park Is No More

First published in the Oct. 27 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

On Oct. 18, 2022, with a vote of 3-2, the La Cañada Flintridge City Council dismantled the pickleball privileges at Glenhaven Park beginning on Oct. 28.
Glenhaven Park is the only city owned outdoor space in LCF that hosted pickleball which the elderly, regardless of disability, can play.
A few months ago, the City Council approved an age-friendly community project to make LCF more accessible to aged residents. With the council’s recent decision concerning pickleball, seniors are having to drive to Pasadena, Glendale and elsewhere to participate in this sport. What kind of a message is the City Council sending? Are their actions making LCF an age-friendly community?
About 17.8% of the population of LCF are 65 or older; however, a handful of people who reside near Glenhaven Park and the 210-freeway complained and their request to do away with pickleball at the park was granted. It is my understanding that the parks are for the enjoyment of all the people of LCF regardless of age. If this is so, why is this age-friendly activity being excluded?
