City Discusses Bear Safety With Community

First published in the Jan. 5 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

The city of La Cañada Flintridge will partner with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to provide a virtual presentation called, “Living with Black Bears in Southern California” via Zoom on Jan. 10 at 6 p.m.
The hourlong session will act as a refresher course on living near bears.
“The beautiful setting of our city comes with the added risk of wildlife encounters,” said Mayor Keith Eich. “It is important that our community members understand basic information about coexisting with wildlife, preventive measures to take and tips to use during a possible wildlife encounter.”
CDFW Human-Wildlife Conflict Specialist Mackenzie Rich’s presentation will include a basic understanding of black bear biology and how it impacts behavior, as well as the department’s policies on black bear management and its decision-making processes. Rich will also provide tips and tools for preventing conflict with black bears and other wildlife species commonly found in foothill communities, such as LCF.
Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions via the chat function on Zoom and during the Q&A portion of the session. To join the virtual presentation, visit us02web.zoom.us/j/82420315234.
