The La Cañada Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir and LCPC Orchestra will present its Assurance and Celebration concert to mark the 75th anniversary of the church on Sunday, March 5, at 2 p.m. The free event is scheduled to be in person and livestreamed.
The concert will feature music that has encouraged the church and its ministries during its long history, as well as music that will inspire the church as it vigorously moves forward through the next 75 years.
The program includes festive arrangements of favorite hymns, including “Blessed Assurance,” “Amazing Grace,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” and “The Church’s One Foundation.” Jazz arrangements include “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “He Never Failed Me Yet,” featuring Diane Wallace, and “When We All Get to Heaven.” Classical anthems include Charles Gounod’s “Sanctus” from his St. Cecilia Mass, featuring Matthew Thomas on the tenor solo, Mozart’s “Laudate Dominum” from his Solemn Vespers, featuring Rebecca Sjöwall on the soprano solo, and the choral version of Sibelius’ “Finlandia.” The popular anthem “The Anchor Holds” will be presented in a new arrangement for choir and orchestra featuring Matthew Thomas on the tenor solo. The audience will be invited to join in singing familiar hymns and songs concluding with Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.”
Preceding the concert, at 1:30 p.m. LCPC’s director of Music and Worship Arts, Jack Lantz will speak about the music of the concert, including the reason each work was chosen. As always, accompanying the concert will be visual media and videos that enhance the musical presentations.
