Spartans Edged at Monrovia in League Opener, 2-1

The La Cañada High School varsity baseball team was edged at Monrovia, 2-1, in its Rio Hondo League opener last Friday.
Sophomore Carson Kelly, who struck out 11 in 6.1 innings, took the loss after allowing only two earned runs on three hits and two walks in a solid effort.
LCHS senior Ethan Geller recorded a hit, a run and a stolen base while sophomore Leon Chen tallied a hit and an RBI. Sophomore Josh Proctor finished with a hit and a walk, senior J.J. Won had a hit and senior Alex Higa walked once.
The Spartans (2-5 overall, 0-1 in league) will visit Temple City for a league matchup on Friday, March 10, at 3:30 p.m. before hosting San Marino on Tuesday, March 14, at 3:30 p.m.

The Wolves lost at La Habra, 5-2, in a nonleague game on Saturday.
Sophomore Brian Xu went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI while freshman Will Grable, who scored once after reaching on a walk, struck out five batters in four innings of relief.
Senior captain Max Brunngraber, senior captain Graham DesHotel and sophomore Rowan Schaeffer each had a hit, sophomore Calvin Chen finished with a walk and an RBI, and sophomore Matthew Chino walked once.
Flintridge Prep was recently edged at Polytechnic, 2-1, in its Prep League opener as Brunngraber racked up 13 strikeouts while allowing two earned runs on four hits and a walk across six innings. Senior captain John Kully recorded a hit, two walks and a run while DesHotel had a hit. Xu was credited with an RBI while sophomore Will Koh, Grable and Chen each walked once.
Flintridge Prep (5-3 overall, 0-1 in league) will host Providence High of Burbank for a league game on Friday, March 10, at 3:30 p.m. before visiting Upland on March 11.

The Golden Knights lost at Harvard-Westlake High in Studio City, 5-2, in their Mission League series finale last Friday.
Senior Lucas Dixon recorded a double and two RBIs while sophomore Jordan Lewallen tallied a double, two walks and a run. Junior Lucas Favretto struck out a batter in 1.2 relief innings, junior Kal-El Holguin pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and senior Xander Douglas pitched a perfect inning of relief. Sophomore Caleb Thatcher finished with a walk and a run while junior Kalani Quiroz walked once.
St. Francis edged visiting Harvard-Westlake, 5-4, to even the league series last Wednesday as Dixon, who recorded a double, two walks, an RBI and a run at the plate, earned the win after strikeout out four in four innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and five walks. Quiroz, who had a hit and a walk at the plate, struck out three across 2.1 innings of relief while Douglas earned the save after pitching 0.2 perfect innings. Junior Holden Deitch produced a hit, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base, Lewallen finished with a hit, a run and a walk, and junior Brody Ruyle tallied a hit and a walk. Caleb Thatcher had a hit, junior Jordan Viramontes was credited with an RBI, and junior John Calmette walked once and scored.
St. Francis (4-4 overall, 1-2 in league) will visit Alemany High in Mission Hills for its league series finale on Friday, March 10, at 3 p.m. before hosting Sierra Canyon High of Chatsworth on March 14.
