St. Monica Academy in Montrose will present Shakespeare’s “Richard III” at Lanterman Auditorium in La Cañada Flintridge on Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15.
Told in its original setting of the War of the Roses, St. Monica’s production boasts a complete medieval battle with knights in armor, bows and broad swords. Running time is 90 minutes plus intermission.
Playing Richard is an exciting challenge for Bobby Tierney, a senior from Altadena whose previous Shakespearean roles include the comedic Touchstone from “As You Like It” and Cicero from “Julius Caesar.”
“‘Richard III’ is a fast-paced, dramatic play that shows how charismatic people can influence us, for better or worse,” director Paula Grimm said.
St. Monica Academy, an independent, coeducational school for grades 1-12, seeks to form students in faith, reason and virtue through a classical education in the Roman Catholic tradition. Its high school, with 120 students in attendance, produces a yearly Shakespeare show.
