LCHS Equestrian Team Makes Strides

Despite windy and rainy conditions disrupting the spring season, the La Cañada High School Equestrian Team finished strong at the final Interscholastic Equestrian League competition at Hansen Dam Horse Park.

Only five of the six scheduled shows were held due to weather, with Show No. 3 continuing amid heavy rain.

The LCHS team has 17 members total, with 12 riders competing in the IEL. Highlights from Shows No. 4 and No. 5 included eighth-grader Chloe Calix earning three ribbons each day, while seniors Ava Strauss and Elle Roh, junior Kaylee Thornburgh and freshman Olivia Cha vied for top jumper positions. In the final show, Roh received the Sportsmanship Award.

In Novice events at Show No. 4, Calix placed fifth in handy hunter, sixth in working hunter and sixth in equitation flat on Charisma. Show No. 5 saw her take fourth in equitation flat, fourth in equitation fences and eighth in working hunter. Cha was 11th in Show No. 4’s Table IV, Section 2 jumper event on Santos before improving to fifth the next day.

The junior varsity jumpers split results at Show No. 4, with Strauss sixth and Thornburgh eighth in Table IV, Section 1. Thornburgh later finished fourth and Strauss fifth in Table II, Section 2B. They moved up to varsity jumpers for Show No. 5, with Strauss third and Thornburgh seventh in Table II, Section 2B. Thornburgh placed third and Strauss fourth in Table II, Section 1.

Despite weather delays and injuries, LCHS finished 21st out of 77 competing schools in total points for the season. The team held its annual awards dinner at La Cabanita, presenting letters to Katelyn Holford (seventh grade, novice dressage), Calix (novice hunter), Thornburgh (junior varsity jumpers) and Roh (freshman hunters).

High point team medals went to Holford (dressage), Calix (hunter) and Thornburgh (jumper).

The league is not sanctioned by the California Interscholastic Federation, but LCHS recognizes equestrian as a club sport, awarding letters for riders accumulating points.
