ALF Musicians Join Students at LCHS 7/8 Concert

The La Cañada High School 7/8 band and orchestra recently played a concert with select musicians from the Assistance League of Flintridge elementary school instrumental music program. The young musicians rehearsed and played alongside their junior high school counterparts under the direction of conductor James Myers. “This concert helps bridge the gap between the elementary schools and junior high school and hopefully inspires these musicians to continue playing when they arrive at junior high school and high school,” explained Myers. For many of the younger students, this was a reunion with Myers, who served for six years as an assistant brass teacher with the ALF program and is an alumnus of ALF and LCHS. The LCHS Music Parents Association, the members of the ALF concert band and string orchestra were treated to a pizza dinner between rehearsal and performance. The combined string orchestras performed the “King’s Court” and the combined bands filled the stage to give a rousing rendition of “Fires of Mazama” by Michael Sweeney. The ALF concert band was led by Michael Davis and the ALF string orchestra by Sahak Karapetyan. “A Boomwhaker Christmas” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas” were two fun songs. The concert concluded with the combined 7/8 orchestra and band forming the Hanukkah Festival Orchestra.
