Historian to Give Free Lecture at Lanterman House

Historian Becky Nicolaides will discuss her recent book “The New Suburbia: How Diversity Remade Suburban Life in Los Angeles After 1945” in a free lecture and signing at the Lanterman House from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 16. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley.
Nicolaides’ groundbreaking study draws upon stories of Black Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos and white residents of the Los Angeles region and contrasts with what she calls the outdated portrayals of suburban life that are presented by Hollywood and the media.
Nicolaides, who spoke at the Lanterman House in 2022 about the history of racial segregation in the area, will include examples drawn from the neighboring communities of Pasadena and San Marino.
The Lanterman House is located at 4420 Encinas Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. Reservations are not required for the lecture, but seating is limited to 50.
