Meyer, who also served as president of the La Cañada Kiwanis Club in 1992-93, had been in failing health for more than a year and entered into the critical stage of illness six months ago, according to his son. He was a resident of Idaho Falls, Idaho.
After serving as LCHS principal, Meyer served as assistant superintendent of business in the La Cañada Unified School District from 1989-94. He then moved to become superintendent of San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District.
Drew was born Aug. 10, 1944, in Long Beach, to Henrietta Valborg-Foss and Anthony Francis “Andy” Meyer. As a young man he entered into military service in the United States Air Force and married Suzanne Elizabeth Van Dyke on June 12, 1966, in Long Beach. (The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year.) After marrying, Drew and Sue had two children, James and David.
“Drew’s life work was devoted to public service in education,” according to the family. “He inspired and supported the efforts of his associates to realize their gifts and talents and to become more than they thought possible. His religious convictions were that of trust in the crucified and risen Son of God, who came to earth to save us all. Christ was his only hope as he faced death and eternity.”
Drew is survived by his sister, Mary Nan Meyer; his wife, Suzanne; his son, James and his wife Mary (Medford) Meyer, their children, Brandon, Kathryn, Cameron, and Preston; his son, David and his wife Jenny (Cluff) Meyer, and their sons, Caleb, Joshua, Andrew, Ian, Henry, William, and Nathan.
Services were to be held Nov. 2 at the Idaho Falls LDS Taylorview Ward.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Andrew J. Meyer Scholarship Fund in care of ISU Federal Credit Union, 2255 East Sunnyside Road, Idaho Falls, ID 83404.
