Obituary | Margaret Morrow Gilmour

Margaret Morrow Gilmour
Date of Death

April 21, 1931-March 7, 2018

Margaret passed to the Lord surrounded by the love of her family and her husband of 65 years, Doug Gilmour, at their home in La Cañada Flintridge. Margaret was born to Andrew and Catherine Morrow in Brawley, California, where she grew up on their farm. She graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1949 moving on to attend USC, where Margaret was the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi in 1951, earned a bachelor’s degree in education and met Doug Gilmour, whom she would marry on July 16, 1953.
She loved the outdoors, tending her garden and spending time at their homes in Yosemite, Sun Valley, Idaho, and vacationing at La Jolla, California. Margaret loved USC, attending football games, basketball games and being a member of the Trojan League of Los Angeles since 1978. She enjoyed tennis, skiing and golf and was a natural athlete in nearly every sport she tried. Margaret was a true lady showing grace and class all her life with compassion and love for all who met her. One could only feel blessed and valued to have been part of her life and could look to her as an example to follow no matter the circumstance. When she entered the hospital in the last stage of her life she whispered “We make this place better” with a smile. She meant the hospital, but we know that was also her effect on the world and those around her.
She loved her family and friends and all were welcome at her house and included at her table where she hosted gatherings for Thanksgiving, Christmas and numerous birthdays annually while cooking gourmet meals from scratch.
Margaret is survived by her husband J. Douglas Gilmour; her three brothers: Howard (Jerry) Morrow, Murray (Jeannie) Morrow and James (Meg) Morrow; her five children: Andrew (Deborah) Gilmour, Thomas Gilmour, Catherine Gilmour, John (Karen) Gilmour and James (Donna) Gilmour; her 14 grandchildren: Steven (Phoebe) Gilmour, Jennifer (William) O’Neill, Kimberly (Isaac) Bowser, Marcus (Whitney) Gilmour, Jonathan Gilmour, Kathleen Gilmour, Hayden Smith, Wheeler Smith, Lynn Gilmour, Matthew Gilmour, Lauren Gilmour, Peter Gilmour, Christian Gilmour and Mason Gilmour; and her six great-grandchildren Archibald Gilmour, Aubrey O’Neill, Sean O’Neill, Jacob Bowser, Grant Gilmour and Sloan Gilmour.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at La Cañada Presbyterian Church, 626 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge, California 91011.
