The ease of procurement and the relatively low cost of these devices on the black market contribute to their popularity among those seeking to evade detection.
Local authorities have outlined ways to prevent WiFi jamming and ensure the integrity of wireless networks:
- Direct connection: Have at least one or two cameras surrounding property hardline into a router/recorder to ensure WiFi jamming will not affect them.
- Alarm System Direct Connection: where possible, consider having an alarm base station hardline into an internet router rather than utilizing WiFi Connection.
- Enable WPA3: One of the primary defenses against WiFi jammers is enabling WPA3, or Wi-Fi Protected Access 3. It is built into a majority of networks today and enhances the security of wireless networks by making it significantly more challenging for unauthorized individuals to interfere with the communication between devices. Information regarding the steps to enable this setting should be in an owner’s manual or located on the manufacturer’s website.
- Make your network password strong and secure: Another primary line of defense for a WiFi network is a robust password. Ensure that a WiFi password is complex, combining letters (both uppercase and lowercase), numbers, and symbols. Avoid using easily guessable information such as a name or address.
- Check for firmware updates regularly: Keep routers and network equipment firmware up to date by regularly checking for updates provided by the manufacturer. Most manufacturers also provide an auto update function, it is recommended to opt into this if available. Firmware updates often include security patches that address vulnerabilities, making it harder for potential attackers to exploit weaknesses in a personal network.
- Use a guest network — and don’t call it “guest network”: Set up a separate guest network for visitors. This network should have its own unique password and limited access to your devices. Keeping guests on a segregated network helps protect a primary network from potential threats.
- Change router default settings: Modify default router settings, including the default login username and password. Attackers often target devices with default settings, so changing them adds an extra layer of protection.
- Stay Informed: Be updated about the latest security issues and best practices for keeping a personal network safe. Regularly check for security updates for devices and be educated on how to recognize any suspicious activity that could be a potential risk to a home network.
With these practical measures and practices, home network security can be significantly enhanced and protected by WiFi jammers and other potential threats. A proactive approach to network security ensures that connected devices operate smoothly and securely, allowing users to enjoy the benefits of a connected home without compromising privacy and data and making homes one step closer to a bastion.
