Dieuwertje Kast, a La Cañada High School graduate participating in the USC Joint Educational Project, has been selected as a 2016 Science Communication Fellow and will sail aboard Exploration Vessel Nautilus during its 2016 expedition.
She will join the Corps of Exploration in May as they partner with Ocean Networks Canada to perform maintenance to the Neptune observatory off the coast of British Columbia.
“I am so honored to have been chosen as a Science Communication Fellow, and I look forward to sharing my deep sea science enthusiasm and passion with my students,” said Kast, who was named one of Forbes magazine’s “30 under 30” awardees this year.
While aboard Nautilus, she will visit four deep-sea sites — Barkley Canyon, Cascadia Basin, Clayoquot Slope and Endeavor. She will be helping the team aboard as they research myriad processes, including hydrothermal vent ecology, underwater volcanoes, submarine earthquake activity and gas hydrates.
Seventeen educators and 22 students from around the world have been selected from a competitive pool of applicants by the Ocean Exploration Trust to participate at sea during the 2016 Nautilus Exploration Program expedition. The trust, a nonprofit founded by Robert Ballard in 2008, has the mission to explore the ocean, seeking out new discoveries in the fields of geology, biology, maritime history, archeology, physics and chemistry while pushing the boundaries of STEM education and technological innovation.
