Goodbye, Sport Chalet

The sales are over; the doors are closed permanently. Sport Chalet, the sporting goods retail giant that was born in La Cañada Flintridge 57 years ago, was shuttered last week, it’s 45,000-square foot anchor store in LCF’s Town Center dark until a new tenant or tenants move in.
Two years ago, Sport Chalet was sold by the Olberz family to the Connecticut-based Vestis Retail Group, which in April filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced that it would close all of its 47 stores.
Between the announcement and Sunday, June 26, the LCF store remained open, offering increasingly steep sales on remaining merchandise.
“It’s sort of like losing part of your family, you know? Like your grandparents passing away,” City Councilman Dave Spence said when the news of the closing originally broke.
The city has plans to work with IDS Real Estate Group, which purchased the Town Center from the Olberz family in 2011, in selecting a new tenant to occupy the largest retail space in town.
